About FUP

“The government does not owe the people education for the simple reason that one does not owe the people what it can take for itself. And education is like liberty: it is not given, it is taken.”

– Jaques Rancière

Free University Brighton was created in the Summer of 2012. We are a cooperative, community-led organisation that provides and promotes free educational events across the City of Brighton & Hove. Our aim is to grow an alternative education system that benefits us all, whoever we are, whatever our financial means.

Free University Photography is a 12 week documentary photography course that ran for the first time in 2018. Seminars, lectures and discussion led students to explore photographic theory and the ethics of representation. Looking at a number of visual artists and theorists surrounding visual culture, students were encouraged to question visual representations from past and contemporary photographic practice.

Each practical brief gave students guidelines, themes and issues to document photographically and weekly crits gave a chance to evaluate and develop their own photographic style. The course culminated in a self-driven photographic project.
